South Carolina state government is preparing to resume executions after a two-decade moratorium on the death penalty.
The state execution of Feddie "Khalil" Owens is currently scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2023 at Kirkland Correctional Institution off Broad River Road, north-east of Columbia.
Preparations for a vigil in protest of the execution are in the early stages. We fully expect a gathering of people opposed to state killing to be called shortly. Timing and placement will depend on ongoing legal appeals and developments in state government. We will make an announcement as information becomes available.
In the meantime, South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty have called for appeals to be made to Governor Henry McMaster's office to commute the death sentence given Freddie Owens.
